I don’t have a picture of this in its bag because I got it in a parcel swap and I decanted it into a tub to store it. I don’t know who sent it, I think possibly the lovely Amey, because I know she sent a parcel of South American goodies – there will be a few more of her items featured over the rest of the month.
I had used tinned hominy once before to make posole from Viva Vegan (not sure where I got that from either!), but never dried. I looked it up on the internet and learned that it needs soaking and a long cook, similar to dried beans. That explains why I’ve had it so long; never organised enough. Anyway I got myself organised, soaked it and cooked it. Wow, that stuff is stubborn. I cooked it for over 4 hours (letting the pan burn dry twice in the process) and it still could really have done with longer!
I used the red posole recipe from Viva Vegan again, and I also made some corn tortillas from the same book to go with it.
I have to say, this is not the fault of the posole recipe or the lovely Amey who sent it, but hominy is not my favourite thing. It’s the first of my MoFo ingredients that I haven’t enjoyed.
I expected it to taste like corn, but it didn’t, it was more like a tough old broad bean. Maybe I cooked it wrong, or I’d had it too long, but I doubt I’ll be picking up more of that.

Cooking the Vegan Books 
Don’t worry! I won’t take it personally. I agree, dried hominy is sort of a jerk to work with. And it really does take FOREVER to cook. The only thing I ever use it for is the tamale masa recipe in Voluptuous Vegan, which i love… and somehow that always works out for me. Otherwise, a lot of times I cheat and buy canned hominy, which is somehow softer. I think it’s treated somehow. Sorry it was sort of a dud!
I didn’t even know dried hominy was a thing! I’ve ordered the tinned stuff online (for the red posole), but maybe dried would be cheaper. If I try it out, I’ll definitely keep the crazy cooking time in mind!
I’ve just avoided recipes with hominy in or used sweetcorn! haha
I have dried hominy for the same reason – posole. I love it, but I think I have like a quarter bag languishing somewhere that I need to so something with.
