This was a present from my Father in Law several years ago. He’d made a lot of alterations to his diet after being diagnosed with cancer, including eating mostly raw and vegan food. (He’s still alive and kicking at least 2 years beyond doctor predictions). He became at that time slightly obsessed with the powers of linseeds (flaxseeds) and decided to become a linseed policeman and investigate whether we were grinding them enough and eating enough of them. Of course, as a good vegan I already ate some crushed linseeds done in my mortar and pestle so thanked him for the kind thought and didn’t think I’d ever use the gift. Just how stupid was I? This little instrument is amazing. The most brilliant part of it is that it doesn’t really matter how small an amount you try to grind. Need 1 tsp ground fennel? No probs. Anyone else who has ever watched as seeds whizz round in the mini blender remaining stubbornly whole will know what a benefit this is. It grinds as finely as you’d like, but not only spices – you can use garlic and herbs and create pastes too. After reading that you’ll be grateful to know that when you wash it there are no lingering smells and it’s dishwasher proof too.
I keep this out on my counter at all times because I use it all the time – from linseeds for breakfast muesli to evening spice blends. Another piece of equipment I wouldn’t like to be without.
I love my spice grinder too. It was one of my essentials when I went vegan a few months ago. I use it all the time, mostly for spices but also for nuts and flax and grains etc. I haven’t tried it for coffee but I bet it would work.
Oh no. Now I want one! (I have the small amount problem all the time.)
I really want one of these now, trying to grind even a 1/4 cup full of flaxseeds in my mini chopper takes forever & I never get all of them. I’ll be putting this on my (now incredibly long) Christmas list!
I’ve been trying to find a good grinder. I’ve had two Krups and they broke after just a few months (and honestly I didn’t even use it much). Thanks for the review Liz. This is going on my Christmas list.
I need to get another one. I have one for really fragrant spices, but I think I need one for nuts, seeds, and flours.
I have got to boy one of those!
wow, I’ve never heard of this contraption, but suddenly i am overcome with my need for one. It sounds PERFECT. I use an old coffee grinder, which works fine, but is hard for small amounts.
